Dentures Relines
A reline is the process of resurfacing the fitting surface of a denture to improve the fit and comfort of an existing denture. Over time, the alveolar ridge/jawbone changes shape or shrinks. The most change happens immediately after tooth extractions once the extraction site heals. Once the traumatised gum heals and begins to shrink, the denture no longer fits the underlying gum. This causes the denture to rock and can allow food to get stuck underneath. Consequently, the denture applies uneven pressure on the underlying gum.
To maintain a close fit of the denture with the gum, a reline is required from time to time
Our denture reline process
Assessment – Our Dental Prosthetist will examine your dentures during your consultation and assess the fit, to determine if a reline is the best treatment option.
Impression – An impression is taken of the fitting surface of the denture,
(the space between the denture base and the gum) to ensure a close fit
of the denture is achieved.
Reline process – A laboratory procedure removes the old fitting surface and
applies a new fitting surface to the denture for a close, well adapted fit.
Adjustment – Your relined dentures will be inserted and adjusted to ensure they fit comfortably and securely in your mouth
Follow-up – With all relines we expect some form of settling in and getting used to the new fit. We will provide instructions on how to care for your newly relined dentures and schedule a follow-up to ensure you are managing well with the changes to your denture.
