Sports Mouthguard for Ultimate Protection

Protect your smile with a custom-made mouthguard!

At the Denture Clinic, we’ve been making mouthguards for more than 20 years and offer a wide variety of colour and design options to choose from to make your mouthguard look as good as it feels.

Our techniques have been tried and tested to reach a process that we are confident will deliver great mouthguards every time.

Our mouthguards are made to an adequate thickness to provide sufficient protection for your age and sport activity. including mouthguards that will fit over teeth with braces during orthodontic treatment. Mouthguards designed to fit over braces can be a little bulkier because they need to accommodate the brackets and wires, but they’re still crafted with comfort as a priority. The added space helps protect both the teeth and the orthodontic hardware without feeling intrusive.

Our mouthguards are also made with growing smiles in mind. By allowing room for teeth to shift and develop, these mouthguards stay functional for longer, helping you get the most value and protection throughout your treatment.

Our mouthguard material is kept to a minimum thickness on the palate, so speech is not affected as much, and there is enough space to breathe with ease.

Why should you wear a custom-made mouthguard?

They fit REALLY WELL! Custom made mouthguards are moulded over a replica of your own teeth, that hugs your teeth and stays in place, so you can focus on the game.

Mouthguards protect your teeth against impact and reduce the risk of tooth fractures. The surrounding soft tissues, like your lips, tongue and cheeks are also protected from laceration caused from broken teeth or accidental biting.

The risk of concussions is reduced when wearing a mouthguard due to the upper and lower teeth being prevented from clashing together during impact or fall.

Athletes can play their game with confidence knowing they have their teeth protected while playing.

Mouthguard process

Consultation and impression: Our Dental Prosthetist will take an impression of your teeth. Dental stone is then added to the impression to create a mould, which the chosen mouthguard blank is moulded over. Our mouthguards are made using a specialized vacuum forming technique, for a more accurate fit.

Collection: Our staff will contact you to let you know when your mouthguard is ready for collection. Where possible, the mouthguard should be tried in at the time of collection to ensure a comfortable fit. On the odd occasion, mouthguards may need to be adjusted to reduce pressure to teeth or gums.

Mouthguards generally take a week to be made. If a special colour is requested and needs to be ordered from our supplier, then it may take a bit longer than usual.

Mouthguard care instructions

Keep the mouthguard in the case provided when not in use.

Avoid exposing the mouthguard to hot environments like the car’s dashboard in summer, or putting it through the tumble dryer.

Clean under lukewarm water with a toothbrush and mild detergent. To keep your mouthguard shining, it’s best to avoid scrubbing with toothpaste (as this can abrade and dull the surface over time).

A tip for our patients: when you collect your new mouthguard, we will also give you the stone model of your teeth to take home. We recommended keeping this model in a safe place where it won’t be broken. This way, if you loose the mouthguard we may be able to use the same model to remake it (saving you the cost of another consult/new impression). Note: for patient’s whose teeth are rapidly changing/growing, this may not be possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a custom sports mouthguard?

A custom sports mouthguard is a professionally made, custom‑fitted protective appliance that sits securely over your teeth. It helps prevent dental injuries during contact sports and high‑impact activities. Custom fitted mouthguards offer far better protection than generic store‑bought options.

Why are custom-fit mouthguards better than store‑bought ones?

Custom-fitted mouthguards are made to fit your mouth and teeth precisely, which provides superior comfort, stability, and shock absorption. Unlike boil‑and‑bite mouthguards, a professionally made dental mouthguard allows you to breathe and speak more easily during play and offers stronger protection for your teeth and jaw.

Which sports require a mouth guard?

A mouthguard is recommended for any sport where contact or collision is possible. This includes rugby, AFL, soccer, hockey, basketball, boxing, MMA, and martial arts. Many clubs and schools now require certified sports mouthguards for training and competition to reduce dental injuries.

How old should children be before they wear a mouthguard?

Children should wear a mouthguard as soon as they begin a sport that carries any risk of facial or dental injury. Custom made mouthguards for kids are especially important because young athletes have developing teeth that need extra protection.

How long does a custom mouth guard last?

Most custom‑fitted mouthguards last for one full sporting season. Adults may keep the same mouth guard longer if their teeth and bite have not changed. Children and teens often need more frequent replacements due to growth and new teeth.

Can I choose colours for my mouthguard?

Yes. Custom sports mouthguards can be made in team colours, multi‑colours, or clear designs. Many athletes choose different colour combinations to match their club uniform or personal preference.

How is a custom mouthguard made?

Your dental prosthetist will take an impression your teeth, then create a high‑quality mouthguard that fits precisely. This ensures even coverage, better shock absorption, and improved comfort compared to off‑the‑shelf options. A custom mouthguard is made from high-quality thermoplastic materials that are designed to absorb impact, protect teeth, and fit comfortably over your individual bite.

Is a custom mouthguard easy to breathe and speak with?

Yes. Because a custom mouthguard is shaped to your mouth exactly, it stays in place securely and allows much easier breathing and speaking during sport than a bulky boil‑and‑bite mouthguard.

How do I clean and store my mouthguard?

Rinse your mouthguard with cold water after use, clean it gently with mild soap, and store it in a ventilated container. Keep it away from hot water and heat sources because they can warp the material.

What should I do if my mouthguard feels loose?

A loose mouthguard will not protect your teeth properly. If your mouthguard no longer fits tightly, bring it in for an assessment. This is especially important for children and teenagers who experience rapid dental changes.

Which sports benefit from wearing a mouthguard?

Sports such as cricket, snow skiing, skateboarding, and netball all carry a high risk of impacts and falls, which are a common cause of dental injuries for athletes across Australia. In these sports, a professionally made mouthguard provides an essential layer of protection for the teeth, gums, and jaw.

Why choose a custom‑fitted sports mouthguard?

Custom sports mouthguards provide more secure, personalised, and reliable protection than boil‑and‑bite versions. A proper dental mouthguard fits closely to the teeth, stays in place during movement, and helps absorb impact across a wide range of sports and activity levels.

How do mouthguards protect the teeth during sport?

Mouthguards provide shock absorption when there is contact, a fall, or a collision. This reduces the force that reaches the teeth and helps prevent chips, fractures, and soft‑tissue injuries. This level of protection is especially valuable in fast‑paced sports like cricket and netball, as well as high‑fall‑risk activities such as snow skiing and skateboarding.
